Alsace
The Alsace region is the area in Northern France, Germany and Switzerland. I was interested in visiting this area because of this unique location and also history. I unfortunately didn’t have the culinary experience that I was seeking, partially because the jet lag that I was experiencing was still disrupting my schedule and also because I found a lot of the food too heavy for my palate.
I did however rent a car for two days and I was able to travel to Eguisheim, Riquewhir and Bergheim. All are beautiful towns with their own personal character and charm. I especially love the scent of all the local bakeries and chimney smoke in the air. This area is a distinct wine region, where one can find Cremant d’Alsace which is a sparkling wine, and also white wines.
I did however try the kugelhopf, which is a yeast-leavened bread with raisins and almonds inside. Mine was topped with powdered sugar. I found the bread not too sweet, light and airy. There are also pretzels that are homemade in all the towns, and these flatbreads called flammekueche, which is basically a flatbread with cheese and lardons (there is vegetarian options). People sit outside drinking their wine and eating the flammekeuche and socialize.
Would I suggest visiting this area? Definitely! Such a beautiful area, not only in the small towns but also lots of nature and wonderful hiking areas. Please enjoy the photos below and feel free to ask any questions!!
